The holiday season is often a time of year that’s full of travel. Whether it’s driving to the store to pick up another round of Christmas gifts or driving through three separate states to visit relatives, you’re sure to be on the road this holiday season. But an increased number of drivers combined with winter weather conditions can lead to more dangerous roadways. So while you’re making your travel plans this year, keep these tips in mind to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday on the roads.

  • Keep your Vehicle Tuned Up – Before you start any trip, ensure your car is properly maintained and prepared for winter driving conditions.
  • Be Flexible With Your Plans – Check weather conditions before making plans and always leave early to combat traffic. If there are extreme driving conditions predicted for your day of travel, try to delay your plans. It’s better to be late and safe than to have an accident trying to make it on time.
  • Reduce Your Speed – Both in increased traffic and in unsafe weather conditions keep your speed down. When there are more drivers on the road the chances for accidents increases, and a lower speed can be the deciding factor in whether or not you have time to avoid a wreck. Safe driving practices also recommend decreasing your speed by 30% when driving in the snow.
  • Be Alert – Winter driving means dealing with snow and black ice. Make sure you are well-rested and alert while driving in order to notice and avoid any hazards weather conditions may create, and be prepared to deal with anything unexpected.
  • Designate a Driver – Holiday gatherings frequently involve drinking alcohol. If you or your loved ones drink at a get-together make sure you all have a plan for how to get home safely. Designate someone to remain alcohol free or plan for an Uber of Lyft to pick up anyone who will be drinking.
  • Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute – The earlier you finish your shopping, the less stressed you’ll be when trying to buy your gifts. Holiday shopping crowds get heavier as the month gets closer to Christmas. If you have to go out last minute to get gifts, expect increased traffic and leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and back safely and slowly.

A T-bone accident, also known as a side-impact collision, occurs when the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another, forming a “T” shape at the point of impact.
