Suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be absolutely devastating. Oftentimes, the road to recovery is not a swift or easy one. In many instances, brain injury survivors will rely on family caregivers to help them through this process, which may include relearning certain skills and talking about their feelings in a safe space.

If your loved one is in this situation, you may be wondering how you can help them deal with their injury and support them through their recovery. Here are four simple steps you can take to do so.

Be as patient as possible

Brain injuries can cause many adverse effects and symptoms. Your loved one may not act or behave how they usually would, especially in the first few weeks after their accident. It’s important that you try to be as patient as possible with them during this time. Remember that they are going through an incredibly difficult time in their life, so they will need your love, patience, support, and help.

Help them get organized

Memory loss is a common side effect of brain injuries, so your loved one may have difficulty remembering where they put things, what appointments they may have, or what they need to do during the day. You can help them by assisting them in a system where they feel more organized and in control of their day-to-day life. For instance, you can help them write to-do lists, leave calendar reminders for them, and label cabinets and drawers that they may need.

Get them out of the house

It’s normal for brain injury survivors to struggle with fatigue, anxiety, depression, and social isolation that may cause them to stay at home for long periods. It’s important for these individuals to get out of the house and get some fresh air when possible, even if it’s only for an hour or even a few minutes a day. You can suggest going for a walk or sitting in a quiet park.

Provide a sense of normalcy

If your loved one was in the hospital after their accident for a long period of time, they are probably completely thrown off of their routine and may feel overwhelmed with the change of environments. You can help provide a sense of comfort and normalcy at home by spending time with them, playing their favorite music, or making them their favorite meal.
