Many of us know the dangers of drunk driving, however, these risks do not stop everyone from getting behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol.

While we can’t stop other motorists from driving negligently or recklessly, we can take steps ourselves to drive defensively and stay vigilant at all times. Some of the warning signs of intoxicated driving to keep your eye out for include:

  • Drifting, weaving, or swerving
  • Speeding excessively
  • Driving far below the speed limit
  • Constantly accelerating and decelerating
  • “Hugging” the center medium
  • Persistent tailgating
  • Reacting slowly to traffic signs
  • Failing to properly utilize turn signals
  • Violating traffic laws
  • Driving in the middle of the road or in the wrong lane

WHAT TO DO IF YOU BELIEVE A DRIVER IS INTOXICATED

If you see a driver that is exhibiting any of these signs of possible intoxication, it is important to report the incident to local law enforcement. Give all relevant information including the vehicle make and model, the license plate number, and location of the car. Make sure to tell the operator that you suspect the driver is potentially intoxicated and why you believe so.

Even if the driver is not drunk, it is dangerous and negligent to be driving while exhibiting any of the signs listed above.
