September is National Preparedness Month, a timely reminder for Hampton Roads families to make a plan before severe weather, road closures, or an unexpected roadside emergency creates stress.
Be Ready, Not Rushed
At Huffman & Huffman, we have seen how quickly an ordinary day can change after an accident or emergency. Taking a few minutes now to prepare your vehicle, save key information, and talk through a family plan can make a real difference when the unexpected happens.

If you approach a stopped vehicle displaying hazard lights, warning signs, flares, or flashing red, blue, or amber lights, Virginia law requires drivers on qualifying multi-lane highways to move into a non-adjacent lane when it is safe to do so. If changing lanes is unsafe or unreasonable, drivers must proceed with caution at a safe speed for the conditions.
And if your own vehicle is involved in a minor crash and can be safely moved, Virginia’s “Move It” law generally requires moving it out of the roadway to help prevent traffic obstruction—without affecting law enforcement’s ability to complete an accident report.
We hope you never need it, but a little preparation can bring peace of mind when life gets unpredictable. From all of us at Huffman & Huffman, stay safe, stay prepared, and remember that our family is here to help yours if an accident happens.
