UBER OUT OF DRUNK DRIVING

Uber Allows Drunk Drivers Off the Streets

Drunk driving and alcohol-related crashes are nothing new and are, unfortunately, very common today in the Hampton Roads area. While we can’t physically stop all people from driving drunk, we can raise awareness about the risks of alcohol-related crashes and possible alternatives to avoid driving drunk. Technology today has revolutionized the way we communicate with others and live our lives, but what if it could also help save lives too? One alternative to help lower the risk of drunk driving is an app called Uber.

What is Uber?

What if I told you there was a way to get a sober and safe ride home that was more efficient and cheaper than calling a taxi? Well there’s an app for that called Uber, and it’s similar to having your own personal driver. Uber is an app that connects you to a local driver instantly through the tap of your phone. Here is how it works…

You enter in your credit/payment information upon making an Uber account which allows for all financial transactions between the rider and driver be done automatically through the app. There’s no need to carry cash or even worry about tipping your driver and rides run about 22% cheaper than taxi prices. The app also links with the location services on your phone, when you request an Uber driver, Uber finds the nearest driver to your location automatically. You then see a picture of your driver, a picture and description of their car, and you can even track to see where your driver exactly is on your Uber map and ETA! A text will be automatically be sent to you upon your driver’s arrival so they can take you safely home or to your desired destination.

Uber safety regulations require all drivers to be given a background check, a driving history check, and all driver’s cars must maintain regulations with ongoing quality controls.

How Uber Reduces Risk…

Since Uber is done all through the app, there is zero hassle of finding a taxi number, explaining to your driver your exact location (the app automatically pinpoints your location), and you don’t have to worry about having cash on you to pay and tip the driver. There is no need to drive buzzed; Uber makes it easy for riders who are going out for a night on the town drinking because it’s easy and efficient.

Uber even partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to raise awareness about drunk driving and reduce the rate of alcohol-related crashes. These organizations did a study on drunk driving awareness and statistics by testing monthly alcohol-related crashes in California. They found that monthly alcohol-related crashes in California for drivers under 30 decreased by 6.5% following the launch of uberX (the ridesharing version of Uber).

Uber makes it easy to avoid drunk driving and reduces the risk of alcohol-related crashes and can help make our streets of Hampton Roads a lot safer. For more information on Uber and Uber in the Hampton Roads area, you can visit their website here: (https://www.uber.com/cities/virginia-beach).
