THE CORRELATION BETWEEN TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES AND PTSD

The events that lead to traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are often psychologically traumatic and can lead to other disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While the symptoms of PTSD or circumstances of the trauma may vary depending on the individual in question, one thing remains the same across the board: PTSD can harm one’s ability to function normally.

Below, we discuss some of the most common causes of this disorder, symptoms that may arise, and treatment options available.

WHY DOES PTSD DEVELOP?

PTSD typically develops after some sort of traumatic event, such as a:

  • Natural disaster
  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Military combat experience
  • Receiving a life-threatening diagnosis
  • Severe accident
  • Loss of a loved one

While there are several factors that can lead to an increased risk of a person developing PTSD, this condition essentially develops when a person’s natural fight-or-flight response is altered during the traumatic event. Even if they are in a safe environment after the fact, the condition may cause them to feel unsafe, stressed, or fearful. Other symptoms of PTSD may include:

  • Vivid and unwanted memories
  • Flashbacks
  • Frequent nightmares
  • Intense physical and emotional distress upon thinking of the accident
  • Hypervigilance or constant alertness
  • Feeling of detachment or numbness
  • Survivor’s guilt after the loss of a loved one

HOW CAN IT BE TREATED?

The good news is that there are effective treatments available that can help a person manage symptoms, teach coping skills, and restore one’s self-esteem:

  • Short-term and long-term therapy
  • Stress inoculation training (SIT)
  • Eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing
  • Medications
  • Support groups
  • Journaling
