DRUNK DRIVING ON JULY 4TH

Independence Day. Hot dogs, fireworks, and barbeques, what’s not to love? The downside to this fun and patriotic holiday during this time of year is the harsh reality of drunk drivers. While the July 4th may be a time for American celebration, it is also one of the deadliest days on the roads and ranks as the second highest holiday, behind New Year’s Eve, that involves the highest number of fatal accidents that involve drinking and driving.

A study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that from 2008 to 2012, 756 people died on the Fourth of July due to drunken-driving crashes, accounting for about 40 percent of traffic fatalities during that five-year period.

This Independence Day weekend, don’t become a statistic and reduce your risk of a drinking and driving related accident. Here are some tips to help you and your family have a fun and safe Fourth of July holiday.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Download the Uber app to get a safe ride home from your Independence Day BBQ. Uber offers your first ride up to $20 to be free if you use the DrinkingandDriving.Org code, DADO
  • Designate a driver. If you’re headed to a party and plan to have a few drinks, find a driver who will remain sober before you get there
  • If you must drive, be patient. Just because you are sober behind the wheel, doesn’t mean that all the other drivers on the road are too. Be extra cautious and drive defensively if you have to drive this upcoming Independence Day
  • Avoid the road this upcoming Fourth of July altogether if you can. Ask the host of the party if you can plan to stay there for the night or plan to stay at a friend’s house close by

While Fourth of July is a great occasion for fun and celebration, keep yourself and others safe by reducing your chance of risk on the road this upcoming holiday.
