While many types of injuries like bruises or broken bones will heal with care and time, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are much different. TBIs can have devastating long-term physical, cognitive, social, and financial ramifications that can impact a person for years to come.
One of the lesser-known effects of traumatic brain injuries has to do with heart health. While there are still studies being done to find the correlations between these two conditions, there is evidence to indicate that TBI survivors are at a higher risk of certain adverse cardiovascular events.
EFFECTS OF TBI ON THE HEART
When a person sustains a TBI, whether it be mild, moderate, or severe, many processes of the body can change. This can lead to the onset of secondary conditions that may seem unrelated but are actually a result of trauma to the brain.
For example, the nervous system’s ability to regulate certain physical and emotional stimuli, such as physical activity or psychological stressors, can be negatively affected. This can put extra stress on the heart and lead to elevated resting heart rate levels and anxiety.
A 2018 medical study published in World Neurosurgery studied the effects of traumatic brain injuries on heart health over a 13-year period and found that patients with TBI had a “significantly greater risk” of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) compared to those who did not sustain such injuries. Types of MACCE include:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart failure
- Arrhythmia
- Strokes
- Mortality
